I think if we had to give up our book shelves, which are new to us but are just right for our family, then that'd be super hard. It could also be the small, neutral-on-purpise play kitchen, too, when my last one says she's done playing with it. It's gotten play from all 4 of mine (2 boys and 2 girls).
But we do have this small wall clock that my husband and got from Target with wedding gift cards. We have had that for 15 years almost, and it has hung in at least 13 different houses. It might be on its last legs, and I swear I'm going to learn clock-making when it goes kaput.
Wow! That amazing to have a clock survive all those moves!! I know what you mean about the toys! We got rid of our play kitchen when we moved back to the States three years ago, but oof. That one did hurt. After I posted this, my youngest came up to me with big tears in her eyes, telling me her brother didn’t want to play “Dinosaurs and Magnatiles” (their epic games involving these two toys). They have spent HOURS playing together, and it sort of sucker-punched me to think this era is ending.
I'm trying right now to figure out how to encourage that play between the oldest kid and the youngest so that it grows and continues into their later years, but I'm sure how to do that yet!
I get you, though. I have had multiple kids come to me with tears when their brother or sister won't continue a play they have done for so many other times.
I also understand this. Often our permanent things are the basics that can be moved from place to place. I cried when I finally gave away the free to me changing table that I used for Selah and Isaac. I hadn’t used it as a changing table in 3 years - it was being used as toy storage and a book shelf. Selah was so excited for her new “real” bookcase until right before bed when she started crying saying “please take a picture - I don’t want to forget it.” And as I took the picture all the memories of her babyness came at me, and I thought … me too.
Oh I love love love this. I am very sentimental so get attached to things because of the memories I have with that thing and I love the way you described your always-theres! 💛
Written so well and may have made me cry. ♥️
Aw thank you! 😘❤️
I like this a lot.
