I was excited and scared when my family was given orders to PCS from Phoenix, AZ to USAG Humphreys, ROK. I asked family and friends for advice and was determined to make the best of it because this was our first time living overseas and I felt far out of my comfort zone. While transitioning we stopped to visit family in CA and were invited to my parents' godson's engagement party. At the party I was thrilled to find out my godbrother's cousin (their moms are sisters) was visiting and she lived with her family at USAG Humphreys. I went from feeling adrift to making a friend and being gifted a hand-drawn map with comments about traffic, gates, schools, and residential areas. And that was how I met Joy.

I don't have any stories of random connections, but one of my best friends is from Brazil, and it is AMAZING how often she meets someone else from Brazil in our west TN town who has a connection to someone in her family back in Brazil.

Also, The Long Winter stresses me out every time I read it, even though I know the ending! It gives me such respect and appreciation for true pioneers of that time.

Oh my goodness, yes! Same feelings re: The Long Winter!! I don't even know how many times I've read it now because I read it a lot growing up. And I still get stressed! (And also feel cold and hungry every time --ha!!) How cool about your best friend finding all those Brazil connections even in west Tennessee!

It is amazing how often we discover these connections. When Mom was in assisted living I usually sat with her at dinner. For awhile, the husband of another resident who sat at the same table would sit with his wife. He was such a nice man, always helpful and trying to brighten up some very difficult and trying times. I so appreciated him and enjoyed his company. Unfortunately it wasn’t until after he passed away that I discovered he was the brother of my aunt’s husband ( in Missouri).

Wow!! That's so cool!! How interesting that he struck you by his kindness first and then you learned that.
