You are a delightful storyteller, Joy! Thanks, as always, for bringing us into the particulars of your world while also pointing to universal truths.
My kids (5 and 7) will only watch The Grinch--the original cartoon with Boris Karloff and what they refer to as “the butt grinch,” or the new animated version that apparently has a scene where the Mean One shakes his butt. The Jim Carey version is a hard pass for them (to my relief). Maybe I can convince them to add Klaus to their Christmas movie repertoire this year!
🤍 my child heart swelled at the mention of Rikki Tikki Tavi ... also love to say it out loud. I definitely need to hear the quicksand story—my husband and I often talk about how quicksand is one of those things you think is really common as a kid because of movies but then go your whole life without actually ever experiencing it (active lava flow is also on that list).
Have you seen A Boy Called Christmas on Netflix? That one makes me cry!
I think it’s one of those things that isn’t like they make it look in movies. I didn’t realize that’s what it was until recently when I was researching quicksand, thinking I might use it as a metaphor. It kills very few people in reality, and when it does, it’s usually because they were stuck somewhere and a tide came in or something. Which is also terrifying to consider, not gonna lie. 😆 But not like in the movies.
I haven’t seen that yet!! I also forgot to mention The Man Who Invented Christmas! It’s about Charles Dickens writing the Christmas Carol and it’s so good if you haven’t seen it yet! We watched it last night.
Inside snakes?!?!

The snakes! Gah. I cannot. You have so many great stories!
I didn’t kill those snakes myself, though, like someone here. 😉💪🏼 Thanks so much for reading!
😆😆

That place was pure luxury compared to the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Guest House in Calcutta (now, Kolkata).
True!
It was a very memorable photo shoot for me, too! Somewhere I have my last photo of that episode. It is blurry as I have started to run!
I’d really love to see that pic!! I don’t think I ever have!!
Loved reading this! We just watched Home Alone for the first time with the kiddos and now my son is making so many traps.
